A young rabbi complained to a rabbi from Rizhin:

“During the hours when I devote myself to studies, I feel life and light, but as soon as I leave them, everything goes away. What should I do?

The rabbi from Rizhin replied:

“You are like a man making his way through a forest on a dark night: for some time another man with a lamp accompanies him, but at a crossroads they part and the first man has to feel his way alone. Now, if you had your own light, you would not be afraid of any darkness.
