One day Nasreddin saw a strange-looking building, in front of which a yogi was sitting, deep in thought. The mullah decided that he could learn something from this impressive figure and began the conversation by asking the seated man who he was.
“I am a yogi,” said the man, “and I spend my time trying to achieve harmony with all living things.”
“This is interesting,” said Nasreddin, “because once a fish saved me from death.”
The yogi asked him to stay with him, saying that in the time he had spent trying to achieve harmony with the animal world, he had never been close to such communication as Nasruddin had achieved.
After several days of contemplation together, the yogi asked Mulla to tell him more about his wonderful experience with the fish, for “now we know each other better.”
“Now that I know you better, I doubt whether you will benefit from what I tell you,” Nasreddin said.
The yogi insisted.
“Well, okay,” said Nasreddin, “the fish really saved my life.” I once had to starve, and she supported me for three days.
