Yamata no Orochi (“eight-tailed-eight-headed monster snake”), in Japanese mythology, a terrible monster in the myth of Susanoo. Expelled by the gods to earth, Susanoo met there the first people, Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi, as well as their daughter, the goddess of the rice fields Kushinada-hime, who told him that the red-eyed eight-headed dragon had already swallowed their seven daughters. Susanoo volunteered to help if the old people gave him their youngest daughter as his wife. He prepared rice vodka (sake), poured it into eight barrels, and the dragon, after drinking the intoxicating drink, fell asleep. Susanoo cut Yamata no Orochi into pieces and found Kusanagi's magic sword in one of them. Susanoo presented this sword to the sun goddess Amaterasu, and she bestowed it on her descendants as a symbol of their power over Japan.
