The deer, eating plant foods, considered itself very virtuous and counted on achieving eternal bliss. However, after the death of two friends, everything turned out completely differently than the deer expected: along with plant food, he destroyed myriads of living beings, small insects and, since he did not in any way repent of what he had done, he deserved a bad rebirth.
And the wolf, who experienced constant repentance, whose lifestyle was caused by natural necessity, just achieved the desired bliss.
