The King of Kozala once met the nun Khema, one of the Buddha's disciples, famous for her wisdom. The king respectfully greeted her and asked:
—Is there a Perfect Buddha on the other side of death?
The nun replied:
“The Teacher did not reveal this, O great king.”
The king was amazed and asked:
- What is the reason for this?
“Allow me,” the nun answers, “to ask you a question.” Do you think, O great king, that you have a treasurer who can count the grains of sand in the Ganges?
- No, I don’t have that, oh most honest one.
“Do you have a treasurer who can count how many measures of water there are in the ocean?”
“I don’t have that, oh most honest one.”
Then the nun said:
“You don’t have that, O great king, because the ocean is immeasurably deep.” This is the same, O great king, as if we decided to comprehend the essence of the Perfect One by the signs of corporeality. It is immeasurable and deep like the ocean. It cannot be judged by human concepts.
The king listened to Khema's speech with joy and approval, stood up from his seat and bowed to her with respect.
