A long time ago there lived a matchmaker in the capital. He spent all day looking for brides and grooms.
Once he betrothed a fifteen-year-old girl to a thirty-five-year-old man, hiding his age. But the bride's parents soon heard that the groom was old.
“We will never give up our daughter: after all, there is a twenty-year difference between the ages of the bride and groom,” they said.
What could the matchmaker do? He decided to complain to the judge. The judge called both sides and asked the girl's parents:
- You gave your word, for what reason are you refusing now?
“The matchmaker deceived us: the groom is twenty years older than the bride, so we don’t agree.” We would have given her away if he had been at least twice her age.
- Let it be as you want. Give him your daughter in five years. The groom must wait this time. Then he will be forty, and she will be twenty, and the groom will be exactly twice as old as the bride.
So the judge decided, and both parties left with apologies. Truly a wise decision!
