The wife tried to wean her husband from this habit, begged and conjured him, saying that he was disgracing himself in public and revealing that he was a real drunkard, that others also drink, but they drink a glass sedately, slowly, and not as greedily as he does.
But it was all in vain, and the husband did not give up his habit. Then the wife figured out how to make her husband disgusted with drinking the glass to the bottom. She bought a beautiful glass at the fair, and on the bottom of it was drawn a beautiful angel, red-cheeked, with blue eyes and gilded wings.
She brought a glass for dinner, poured it full of wine and brought it to her husband. He began to look, saw an angel at the bottom, smiled, ran his hand over his mustache, took a glass and drained it to the last drop.
“Shameless, aren’t you afraid of God’s little angel that you drink so greedily?”
“Be quiet, wife,” answered the husband, “I was afraid that the angel would drown in wine, and I felt sorry for him; That's why I drank like that.
Soon there was a fair again, the wife bought another glass, and on the bottom of it was drawn an ugly little devil with horns and a tail - a real monster.
The wife brought a glass for dinner, poured it full of wine and brought it to her husband. He examined it, smiled as before, stroked his mustache and drank the glass to the bottom, to the last drop.
- Poor thing! - exclaimed the wife. “Aren’t you really afraid of the devil that you’re drinking so greedily again?”
“Be quiet, wife,” said the husband, “I didn’t want this bastard to get even a drop, and therefore I drank to the bottom.” I won’t leave him anything when my throat is dry.
“It’s all in vain!” thought the wife. “The wolf sheds his hair, but doesn’t change his habits.”
