To one baker, Schreitele brought two sacks of flour every night. At first the baker did not know about it, but one day he saw the schreitele running out of the house in white clothes. And the shreitele’s clothes are torn. The baker took pity on the good schreitel, ordered him a dress made of red cloth and placed it so that the schreitel could easily notice it. The next night the shreitele came, brought bags, saw a red dress, put it on and since then has not appeared again. The baker did not know that he should have given a white dress, not a red one. Since then, the shreitele has not come to this house. The baker, saddened by the fact that he had lost gifts to the schreitel, left a red dress for him several times, but no one took it. Then someone advised him to leave white clothes with a white cap. Imagine the baker’s joy when he saw in the morning that the dress had disappeared, and there were four extra bags of flour in the bakery!
From then on, the baker began to get rich, and the beggars began to come to him in droves. Not one of them left the baker without an alms - a loaf of bread or challah for Shabbat.
