The story of how Cojimar beach got its name.
One day, a cheerful black man and his Galician friend went for a walk in the vicinity of Havana. After some time, they met a Galician they knew. The three of them walked further and soon reached the place that is now called Cojimar beach.
They were walking along the beach, and suddenly the Galician decided to show how great he was at swimming.
“Listen,” he says to the black man, “let’s go for a swim, let’s swim a little, shall we?”
- With pleasure. It doesn’t stop us from taking another swim!
- So let's go! - exclaimed the Galician.
They immediately undressed and swam.
“Look there,” the black man pointed to a flower growing on a steep cliff wall, high above the sea. “If only you could jump into the water from that cliff and pick a daisy on the fly!” Is it coming?
The Galician agreed. He climbed the cliff, jumped and picked a flower in flight.
- Bravo! Bravo! - the friends shouted.
Now people gathered around them, and the black man told everyone about the Galician’s feat.
- Yes, this cannot be! - someone doubted.
- Come on, friend, show these people the art of demolition! - exclaimed the excited black man.
The Galician agreed, and the daisy was put back in its original place.
In front of the whole people, the Galician jumped again, but this time unsuccessfully: when he grabbed the flower, his hand slipped, and he plopped down into the water with all his might. A tall fountain of water shot up over the sea.
The Negro shouted to the Galician from the cliff:
-Did you grab her, buddy? And he, choking, answered:
- Grab... grab... I grabbed the sea, damn it! After this amazing story, the beach began to be called Cojimar - Captured by the Sea.
