One day the Sufi Master and his disciples were looking for a place to stay for the night. But the inhabitants of the nearest village drove them away, mistaking them for charlatans, and they had to stop for the night in the forest. For dinner they laid out their last scraps of provisions, and the Master offered a prayer of thanks.
“Teacher,” the students asked, “but what are you thanking God for? Today he has not given us either bread or shelter, and in general there are wolves howling around us—what should we thank?”
“I don’t know that,” answered the Master. “I only know one thing: He gave us exactly what we need most now.”
