What is God like?

One man had two sons. To give them the knowledge of God, he sent them to a mentor. A few years later they returned home and welcomed their father. The father hurried to find out what they had learned and asked the eldest son:

“My dear son, you have studied all the scriptures and philosophical systems, tell me, what is God like?”

The eldest son tried to describe the Absolute, Brahman, citing various passages from the Vedas. The father listened to him silently.

Turning then to his youngest son, he asked him the same question. The youngest son did not respond with words; he remained motionless and in silence sought to enter into communication with God. Then the father exclaimed:

“My dear child, you have approached the realization of Brahman. Your silence is a better answer than repeating hundreds of verses from the Vedas, because God is indescribable in words.
