One famous Viennese surgeon told students that a surgeon must have two qualities: he must not be squeamish and must be observant.
With these words, he plunged his finger into some stinking, sickening liquid, then pulled it out, put it in his mouth and sucked it. Then he asked each student to repeat what they had seen. The students fearlessly did what they were asked to do.
Smiling, the surgeon said:
- Gentlemen, congratulations, you have passed the first exam. But, unfortunately, you failed the second exam, because none of you noticed that I licked the wrong finger that I dipped into the liquid.
