The famous sword master Tsunahari Bokuden traveled on a large boat on Lake Biwa. One of his fellow travelers, a cocky young samurai, challenged him to a duel.
“What kind of school do you have,” the young fanfare asked arrogantly. “The school of those who overcome without laying hands,” Bokuden answered calmly. In order not to harm other passengers, he suggested fighting on a small island in the middle of the lake. When the boat approached the island, the dueling enthusiast was the first to jump ashore. And Bokuden took the oar and pushed off from the stone. The boat sailed away from the island.
“This is the school of those who conquer without laying hands,” summed up Bokuden, who did not want to waste the blood of an unreasonable person.
