God Krishna wanted to test the wisdom of his kings and one day invited a king named Duryodana, known throughout the country for his cruelty and stinginess, and whose subjects lived in constant fear. And God Krishna said to King Duryodana:
“I want you to go around the whole world and find me a truly good, kind person.”
Duryodana replied:
“Yes, my lord,” and obediently went in search.
He met and talked with many people. After a long time, he returned back to God and said:
- My God, I did everything as you told me and went around the whole world in search of such a person. But I didn't find it. All the people I have met are selfish and vicious. You can't find that good man you're looking for anywhere.
And God Krishna sent him away and called another king, whose name was Dhammaraja, known for his generosity and kindness, and dearly loved by his subjects.
And Krishna said to him:
“King Dhammaraja, I want you to travel around the world and bring me at least one truly vicious person.”
Dhammaraja also complied and set out on a journey where he met and talked with a large number of people.
Much time passed before he returned to Krishna and said:
- My lord, I let you down: I didn’t find anyone. There are deceived people, people who are misled, who have gone astray, who act without knowing what they are doing, but nowhere have I been able to find a truly sinful person. They all have good hearts, despite their weaknesses!
