In Telemark, in the community of Rauland, between the villages of Urebø and Øygard, on the shores of Lake Totak, there is one valley strewn with huge boulders. It seems that someone demolished the top of the mountain and threw stones at the entire valley. And they tell such a legend about it.
In ancient times, many people lived in those parts. Once we celebrated a wedding on one of the farms, and all the surrounding residents came to it. They drank, ate and had a great time. The troll saw this from his mountain. And that troll's name was Thor Trollebane. And he wanted beer. Thor Trollebane descended into the valley, came to the feasters and sat down at the table. The troll was enormous in height and had a bottomless belly. He eats and drinks, but nothing is enough for him. The owners here were afraid that the giant would completely eat them up, and let’s drive him away from the table. Thor got angry and frowned. His neighbor at the table noticed this and realized that trouble was not far away. But he was a kind-hearted man and said to Thor:
“Let’s go to my farm, I’ll pour you some beer and give you something to eat.”
They came to the farm, and the owner rolled out a whole barrel of beer for the troll. Thor drank it, ate his master's heifer, and his anger diminished a little, although it did not completely go away. So Thor says to the peasant:
“Those people offended me, and there will be no forgiveness for them from me.” But you are not as greedy as they are, and for that I will spare you.
He took the peasant and his family, put him in his pocket and took him to the mountains.
“Now,” he says, “see what happens.”
Thor raised his hammer and hit it on the top of the mountain - and stones fell onto the valley, and no one could escape from them.
Thor took revenge on the offenders and said to the peasant:
“I made you a waste: I drank all your beer and ate your only chick.” But don’t regret it - for this you will receive the entire Urebø valley from me. I will clear it of stones, and you will live there.
The giant kept his word. He cleared the Urebo farm and the road to it, and a good peasant and his family settled on that farm.
