Useful people doing useful work do not get annoyed when they are called useless. But worthless people, who imagine that they are doing important work, become very angry if such things are said about them.
“I visited,” says Qazvini, “one group of fairly sincere Sufis. They practiced invoking God and playing stringed instruments. I listened to conversations of eminent authorities and attended festivals of Masters, living and dead. I dressed myself in patched clothes and begged, as recommended by the classics. I prayed, I fasted, I gave alms. I learned complex spins and litanies and took part in Stillness. I improved my ability to control my inner excitement. I learned how to erase my self and how to restore it purified. Then I met the Trial itself. It asked me:
-What are you looking for?
I replied:
- I'm looking for the Master.
Test said:
“If you had asked for more activity, it would have been given to you.” But since you want the Truth, I will lead you to the Truth.
It led me to the Master. And the Master taught me what all these external things that I had learned really meant.
After I returned to the world, no one listens to me and external activities continue. As the Master predicted to me, it will continue until the end of the world.”
