In those distant times, when there were many hermits in Ireland, three holy monks, turning away from the bustle of worldly and empty chatter, decided to leave the world to find peace, divine silence and detachment on the secluded island of Inish Coil.
They built themselves a hut out of stone and there, in silence, indulged in fasting, contemplation and reflection.
During the entire year of this holy life they did not utter a single word.
When the first year of wonderful service to the Almighty ended, one of them said:
– Isn’t our life full of goodness? At the end of the second year the second monk replied:
- Completed.
And when the third year was coming to an end, the third holy father stood up, girded himself, took his psalter and said:
- I'm leaving to find silence. There are too many speeches on Inish Coil for me.
In the old days they said:
Everything irritates her, but the cat just breaks her heart.
