One night the peasants were returning home from the market. The night was moonlit. We stopped at a well to drink water and saw the full moon at the bottom.
- This is such happiness, brothers! Someone dropped a wheel of cheese! Huge - as big as a millstone, yellow as butter! - one exclaimed.
- Shut up, why are you yelling? So the whole village will hear,” others shouted at him and began to draw water from the well with their hats, bags and boots in order to pull out the cheese.
While they were working like this, the moon disappeared behind the mountain and the cheese disappeared. They began to search each other: each suspected the other. But no one had any cheese. They crossed themselves in amazement, and the oldest said reproachfully:
- No matter how much you talk, no matter how much you argue, you cannot deceive me. The cheese was not eaten by the water, but either by someone's dog or by one of you. But it serves me right, why am I bothering with such fools.
