“The joy of wandering,” answered Le Tzu, “is that you enjoy the absence of the old.” Others on their travels observe what they see. On my travels I observe what changes. There are wanderings and wanderings! No one has yet been able to determine the differences in these wanderings!
“You, Defense of the Robbers, travel, of course, like others, but you say that it is different from others.” You always see changes in everything you look at, you enjoy the absence of the old in other things, and you don’t know that the old is also absent in you. Wandering in the outer world, you do not know how to observe the inner world. He who wanders in the external seeks completeness in other things; whoever observes the inner finds satisfaction in himself. Finding satisfaction in oneself is what is true in wanderings; seeking fulfillment in other things is what is not true in wanderings.
And then Le Tzu realized that he did not understand the meaning of wandering, and for the rest of his life he never left.
- The truth is in travel! - said the teacher from Bowl Mountain. - During true wanderings, they do not know where they are going; with true observation they do not know what they are looking at. All things wander, all creatures observe - this is what I call wandering, this is what I call observation. That’s why I say: the true is in wanderings! The truth is in wanderings!
