The Tale of the Creation of Night

When Yama, the son of Vivasvat, died, Yami, his beloved sister, shed inconsolable tears, and there was no limit to her grief. In vain did the gods try to ease the burden of her grief. To all their persuasion and admonitions, she answered, “But he died only today!” And then there was neither day nor night. The gods said: “So she will not forget him. We will create the night! And they created the night. And the night passed and the morning came; and she forgot about him. That’s why they say: “The cycle of night and day brings oblivion of grief.”
