Ra by that time had already become a decrepit old man: his hands were shaking, his lips were trembling, saliva was dripping from his mouth onto the ground. Isis collected this saliva, mixed it with dust and sand, and from this mixture created a snake in the form of an arrow. She placed the poisonous reptile on the road along which the sun god often walked while inspecting his possessions - Upper and Lower Egypt.
And so the snake bit the great god! Ra screamed in unbearable pain. His voice reached the heavens and attracted the attention of the Great Nine.
- What's happened? - the gods exclaimed, but Rane even had the strength to answer them. His jaws trembled and all his limbs shook, and poison flooded his body like the Nile floods the earth. Overcoming the pain, with incredible effort the solar god said:
- O gods, created from my body (and) came out of me! I'll tell you what happened to me. Something painful pierced me, and my heart knows what, but my eyes do not see it, and my hand does not grab it. I don’t know who did this to me! I have never experienced pain like this, and there is no pain stronger than this! <...> I was struck by a snake, which I do not “surrender!”
And Ra asked to bring all the gods to him: maybe one of them knows magic and can heal him? The gods have come. Among them was Isis. She asked Ra: “My divine father, didn’t a snake bite you?” Didn't one of your children raise his hand against you? Truly he will be defeated by my charms, I will force him to retreat from the sight of your rays!
“I was really bitten by a snake,” moaned Ra. “He stung me while I was surveying my domain.
“I will heal you,” said Isis, “but for this you must tell me your secret name, for everyone, even people, live when their names are pronounced by others!”
- My name? - asked the sun god. - Know this: I am the creator of heaven and earth, I created the mountains and everything that is on them. I created Time. <...> I am Khepri in the morning, Ra at noon and Atum in the evening.
But this did not help Ra. The poison did not come out, and the great god did not feel relief. After all, he wanted to deceive Isis: he did not tell her his secret, secret name, which contained all his power. Isis understood this and said to the sun god:
“Your name wasn’t in what you told me!” Tell it to me, and poison will come out, for the man whose name is spoken lives.
The poison burned, flaring up, and its flame was stronger than the flame of fire. Ra realized that he had no other choice but to reveal his secret name to Isis. Reluctantly, the sun god ordered all the other gods to leave and, left alone with Isis, told her his secret name. He did not pronounce it with his lips, but conveyed it to Isis from heart to heart, so no one except Isis recognized the secret name of Ra. And when he announced his name, Isis, the great enchanter, said:
- Flow, poison, come out of Ra? <...> I create, I make poison fall to the ground, for it is defeated!
Now, knowing the secret name of Ra, Isis gained great power and could endow Horus with power.
