The Preacher and the Old Woman

The Preacher and the Old Woman
Enlight

The priest of the Ilor church had a habit of preaching very loudly. One of the old women who was present at the sermon cried while listening to him.

One day the priest noticed this and, thinking that the old woman was moved by his words, which called to God and to the voice of conscience, he called her to him and asked why she was crying at his sermons. Was it not his words that touched her soul and made her shed those pious tears?

The old woman replied that she was really very touched by his sermons. She is a widow; her late husband left behind an emasculated goat, which had the habit of braying in the mornings and evenings. The goat was eaten by wolves, and the old woman was left without any support in life. And now, when she listens to the loud exclamations of the preacher, they resemble the voice of her dead goat, and it brings her to tears.
