The Power of Confidence

People turned to Ibn Sina for help in difficult situations, when other doctors admitted their own powerlessness.

One day a woman was brought to him. She was the wife of a famous doctor, but no one could help her. Her throat was blocked and she had been unable to swallow food for several weeks and was very weak.

The master told her:

- Now you will drink some milk.

The patient replied:

- This is impossible. Everything I try to drink immediately comes out.

She said this with great confidence. But the Master’s confidence was incomparably greater. The sick woman was given a bottle of milk. Having taken a sip, she immediately tore it away with force.

- You see! I warned you! - she said.

The master insisted:

- But it's funny. I'm sure you can swallow some milk now. Try it.

The woman tried again, but the milk was immediately rejected. But it seemed to her that she still swallowed a small portion. The master smiled, encouraged her and said:

“I’m sure you’ll drink this entire bottle of milk before you leave here.”

This was said with great force. The woman, inspired by the Master’s confidence and her own success, gradually drank the rest of the milk.
