The Orphan and the Beardless Deceiver

The Orphan and the Beardless Deceiver

Whether it happened or not, there lived a poor orphan who had nothing and no one. One day he got hold of grain and took it to the mill to grind. A beardless deceiver came to the same mill and also brought grain. The orphan ground his grain. He was about to leave, and the beardless deceiver said to him: Let's go together.

“Let’s go,” says the orphan. Went. They're coming. - You know what? And we’ll knead yours and add mine. “Very good,” says the orphan.

They kneaded the dough from the deceiver's flour, added the orphan's flour, and baked glorious golden brown bread. The beardless man looked at the bread and said: “Let’s bet: whoever lies better will get the bread.” “Okay,” says the orphan. “We had one goose,” began the beardless deceiver, “my grandfather raised him.” He was such a wonderful goose: no matter what the work was - in the house, in the field, plowing, or mowing - he alone managed everything. One day we were driving through a field. Suddenly, unfortunately, a jackal rushed at us and tore out the entire side of my goose. A goose has fallen and is dying. The orphan began:

They found out that a bee was stuck overseas - it broke its leg, some robbers caught it there, harnessed it to a plow, and the poor bee plows the land for them. Who gave it to you? They are not inferior. A huge walnut tree grew from the bee's neck. The tree grew and grew, there were so many nuts on it, so many, all we did was knock them down and carry them around to sell. A crow stuck to this tree and gnawed all the nuts. The father threw a lump of earth at the crow, and the lump stuck on a tree. He grew tall, stretched out, a huge field spread out on the tree - even Pasha, even this one. We planted a vineyard on it, the vine stretched out, filled with berries, and what kind of berries were fun to watch even for the enemy. We are waiting - we are about to start collecting, when suddenly, out of nowhere, a jackal fox appeared, destroyed our entire vineyard, ate everything, destroyed everything - completely ruined us. I decided: “I’ll go and lie in wait and catch him.” No sooner said than done. I found a loophole through which the fox was sneaking into the vineyard, sat down, and waited; I see someone coming and making noise. My heart is bursting with fear: I’m trembling, I’m rejoicing, I’m waiting, I’m about to see a jackal-fox. And indeed, a jackal fox appeared. He pulled out the whip and let's whip her. I beat her, and she’s all covered in papers and scattering rubbish.

- What is written on those papers? - interrupted the beardless deceiver. - Bread for the orphan, and rubbish for the beardless. The orphan got the bread.
