The king's son lay in bed dying. He remained in a coma for eight days - they could not save him, but death could not lay claim to him. On the one hand, the king prayed for his salvation, while, on the other hand, knowing that there was so much pain and suffering around him, he at the same time felt the futility of life. The king could not sleep these seven nights, but on the eighth he dozed off and had a dream.
Usually we dream of those things that are not satisfied in life, and so the king, sitting at the bedside of his dying son, dreamed that he had twelve strong and healthy sons. He saw himself as the emperor of a large country, the ruler of the whole earth, the owner of large beautiful palaces. He saw himself immensely happy. He dreamed all this...
Time passes faster in a dream; In dreams, time is not at all the same as in our everyday life. In an instant, a dream can cover a period of many years, and when you wake up, it is difficult for you to understand how a dream that lasted only a few moments covered so many years!
And so, while the king was dreaming of twelve sons and beautiful wives, palaces and a great kingdom, the sick twelve-year-old prince died. The queen screamed, and the king's sleep was abruptly interrupted.
He woke up in shock. The Queen asked him anxiously:
- Why do you look so scared? Why aren't you crying? Why don't you say anything?
“No, I’m not scared, but confused,” he answered. - I'm very confused. I wonder who should I mourn? Should I mourn the twelve sons I had a moment ago, or the one I just lost? That's what worries me: who died? And the strange thing is that when I was with these twelve sons, I did not know about this son. He wasn't there at all; there was no trace of him or you. Now that I have come out of the dream, you are here and here is my son - but those palaces and sons have disappeared. What's true? Is this true, or was this true? I can't understand.
When you remember past lives, it is difficult for you to figure out whether what you see in this life is true. You realize that you have seen the same thing many times before and none of it lasted forever - everything was lost. Then the question will arise: “Perhaps there is no more truth in what I see now than in what I saw before?.. Because this life will take its course and fade away just as it happened before.”
