At a meeting of rabbis, the sages discuss one of the sections of the Holy Law, and one of them stands alone against all the others in its interpretation. There is pressure on him, but he knows that he is right, and, therefore, God is on his side.
And so, desperate to prove that he was right, the old rabbi turned to God:
“Great God, if I’m right, let all the rivers flow up the hills.”
And then all the rivers changed their direction. But the rest of the sages were not impressed.
“God Almighty,” the rabbi prayed again, “if I am right, may all the trees bow to the ground.”
And all the trees bowed to the ground in an instant. But this did not make an impression on his interlocutors. The old rabbi again appealed to the Almighty. And the walls slanted. Then the main opponent shouted at them:
“It’s not your place to interfere when wise men argue!”
And the walls straightened out of respect for him. But out of respect for the first one, they did not straighten up completely.
Then a Voice came from the sky:
- Why are you arguing? It is said so-and-so, which means it must be understood in such-and-such a way!
Then the main opponent raised his head and replied:
“You gave us the Torah, and it is our business to interpret it!”
