Zen is a creative state that arises when “the thirsty one falls to the source of Being.” It is impossible to convey this in words, but the Masters strive to express this through the example of their lives, as if saying: “Why words? Do as I do!”
The mind is constant questions and answers. An inquisitive person must have questions, but if he accepts the answer, the question dies. Questions must remain. One eternal question to Being and one eternal, continuous answer of Being.
One scientist came to Buddha and asked many questions at once. Buddha asked him:
—Have you come to search or ask questions?
The scientist replied:
- What's the difference? The question is the search!
Buddha said:
- The difference is the same as when Heaven and Earth are commensurate. Search is thirst, and question is a game of the mind.
Zen haiku says:
Wild geese fly across the lake. The lake, of course, reflects them. Geese do not ask: “Repel us.” The lake does not say: “Thank you for coming to be reflected in me.”
