There is an Indian city in the mountains, at an altitude of 2 thousand meters above sea level - Saculeu. In this city a chief named Tecum (grandson of Kikab) was born and raised. He was a strong, dexterous and intelligent warrior and he was destined to become the last ruler of this city before it was conquered by the Spaniards.
In 1525, Spanish conquistadors led by Pedro de Alvorado invaded central Guatemala. And Tecum raised the people to defend their homeland from foreigners. Standing on a hill before the decisive battle, he watched the conquistadors approach and then led his army into battle. But he was mortally wounded by the conquistadors and when he fell to the ground, the Quetzal poultry descended onto his chest. She touched the leader’s blood and flew upward. Since then, Quetzal no longer lives in captivity, so meeting her is a great success.
Dying, Tecum said that when the Indians become truly free, the Quetzal bird will return to the people.
