Since time immemorial, two stars, bright and brilliant, walked in the sky. One was hot, the other was cold, and they were never separated.
And on earth in one village lived a girl named Taiyang (Taiyan - sun.). She was smart and very pretty, and everyone in the area praised her. Taiyang loved a young man named Yuelian (Yueliang - moon), who lived in a neighboring village.
He often came to their house to help with the housework, and the young people knew each other well since childhood. The girl in her heart dreamed of becoming his wife. He, too, secretly loved her dearly. But Yueliang was poor, he did not have a piece of land and did not dare to think about marrying Taiyang.
Meanwhile, Taiyang's parents betrothed her to a powerful evil sorcerer named La-ya. Having learned about this, the girl ran with the sad news to Yuelian. They walked along the shore of the pond for a long time and tried to figure out a way to prevent this wedding. At the dam they saw a large black stone, sat down on it and again consulted for a long time - what to do? But they couldn’t come up with anything.
Suddenly they heard some kind of groan. Both were surprised: after all, there was no one here except them! But Taiyang, as if having guessed something, grabbed Yuelian’s hand, they both knelt down, and the girl said:
- Stone, stone! If you have a soul, help us in trouble!
Imagine their amazement when they heard in response:
- Come here on Thursday before dawn, I will help you.
Having learned that La-ya's relatives were going to come for her, Taiyang told them to come on Thursday before sunrise.
And now this day has come. It was not yet dawn when La-ya and his relatives came for the bride. Taiyang ran to the dam and saw that Yuelian was already sitting on a rock and waiting for her. She also jumped onto the stone.
La-ya saw how the girl ran to the dam, how she jumped there on a black stone on which some young man was sitting, and how suddenly both of them disappeared.
La-ya approached the stone, lit a fire around it: there was a terrible roar, the stone split, the flame rose to the very sky, and Taiyang and Yueliang, turning into a pair of swans, flew away.
But La-ya used witchcraft to force them to return to earth and turn them into people again. The sorcerer tried to force Taiyang to become his wife, but, despite all his power, he could not achieve anything.
Having lost all hope, La-ya decided to separate her from Yuelian and planned to settle each of them on one of the two stars that wandered in the sky. So the girl found herself on a cold star, the young man on a hot one. Taiyang suffered severely from the cold and asked La-ya to move her to a hot star. He fulfilled her request, but at the same time moved Yuelian to a cold...
Once again they found themselves separated. True, the stars walked across the sky together all day long, and the lovers saw each other, talked to each other, and joked. But even this did not give La-ya peace, and with his witchcraft power he arranged it so that the hot star began to appear in the sky only during the day, and the cold one only at night.
From then to the present day, people see Taiyang - the Sun in the sky during the day, and Yuelian - the Moon at night. And these poor lovers are never destined to be together again!
