One day, two students - both of them great rogues - went to wander around the world.
They walked and walked, got lost and came across a house where a soldier lived. The students had bread with them, and the soldier had fried chicken.
And so the cunning people, having decided to laugh at the simpleton soldier, suggested:
“There’s still not enough bread and chicken,” they say to the soldier, “for everyone.” Let's go to bed, and whoever has the most incredible dream will get all the food.
They went to bed. After a while the soldier got up and ate the chicken and bread. The students woke up and began to tell who had what dream.
One says:
“I dreamed that I was at the very edge of the sky, at the edge of infinity.”
Another says:
- And I saw in a dream that I was descending into the very depths of the earth...
They ask the soldier what he dreamed about.
“And I dreamed,” says the soldier, “that you both went far, far away—one to the very edge of the sky, and the other to the very depths of the earth.” So I thought it was unlikely that you would ever return, so I got up and, without waking up, ate both the chicken and the bread.
