Spirit of the Well

In one small village there lived a husband and wife who constantly argued with each other. One day, a wife became so angry with her stupid husband that she grabbed him by the ear and pushed him into a deep well. At the bottom of this well, as always happens, lived a genie, one of the most disgusting and evil. As soon as the husband saw him, he immediately began to howl and shower him with such abuse, which he had not heard since the times of King Suleiman and the son of Daud (peace be with them both!). Insulted and alarmed, the genie was forced to rise from the depths of his refuge to the heavens and, hovering over the frightened woman who was anxiously looking into the well, he thundered:

- Pathetic woman! Are you to blame for throwing such an incredibly nasty person into my quiet well, which has served as my home for ten thousand years?!

- Yes, but what about me? - the woman answered. “I lived with him for twenty years, but you can’t even do two minutes!”

- Unhappy! - the genie cried, for even he was not devoid of some higher feelings, and besides, the howl of her husband was still ringing in his ears. - I think I understand you.

“Well, here’s what,” said the sensible woman, “since I don’t want to pull him out of the well, and you, as I understand it, hardly want to return there, you can go with me to the city.” I'm going to go and look for a better life for myself, in any case, get as far away from my hubby as possible.

The genie agreed, and they set off along the road, chatting pleasantly about this and that.

The genie asked:

- How are you going to get a job in the big city?

“Something will turn up,” she answered.

- I propose this. The king has a daughter. I will enter her and take over her consciousness. Then you will appear and drive me out. Naturally, the king will reward you.

- Great idea! - the woman agreed.

- Condition! You will say the word that drives me out just once, otherwise you will be in trouble.

“As you say,” the woman agreed.

The genie hurried forward and, entering the princess, made her completely mad. She writhed and screamed, blasphemed and threw herself at people, and soon it became clear to everyone that the girl had a genie. As soon as the woman reached the city, she was immediately told a terrible story, adding that the king had promised an incredible amount of gold to anyone who could cure the princess, and would hang anyone who promised to do so and did not do it. Then she hurried to the fairground and began to shout: “I’m expelling the genies! The world's best genie exorcist has arrived! Bring to me those possessed by genies, and I will drive them out in one go! The woman was immediately grabbed by the guards and taken to the palace. They brought the princess to her, grimacing and twitching, and she, with the word given to her by the genie, drove him out.

Of course, the king was so happy that he gave the woman as much gold as she wanted, and she lived in the city no worse than the king himself.

However, not everything was so simple with the genie. Expelled from the princess and unable to return to his well, he wandered around and, feeling the need to commit outrages, almost without realizing what he was doing, the genie returned to the same city and entered the princess's mother, the queen.

The king immediately ordered the woman to be brought and ordered:

“Exorcise this demon immediately, otherwise I will kill you!”

After such words, she had no choice, and she went to the woman’s bed and whispered the magic word in her ear. Screaming and roaring, the enraged genie appeared before her in the form of a bull with a snake head, rolling its eyes and spitting fire.

“In the name of the Great King Suleiman, son of Daud (peace be with them both!),” he roared, “for this I will enter you!” And you will never be able to banish me, because you will be too obsessed with me to remember the magic word!

“My good friend,” the woman said calmly, “if you do this, I will immediately return home to my husband, and you will have to endure him for the rest of my life.”

Faced with this prospect, the genie ascended into the heavens and departed screaming.
