One day a merchant bought an expensive chandelier for his house. Crystal, decorated with precious stones, it cost a fortune. The chandelier was hung in the living room, and the end of the rope was hooked to a hook in the attic.
One day a poor boy came to a merchant's house and asked for old clothes. He was sent to the attic, where unnecessary things were stored, and was told: choose what you like. The boy picked up a bag of clothes and began to look around for something to bandage it with. He noticed a taut rope and, without thinking twice, cut it. There was a terrible roar, and a moment later the owner rushed to the attic.
- What have you done?! - the merchant shouted.
“Nothing,” the boy answered confusedly, “I just wanted to cut off a small piece of rope.”
“You got your piece of rope,” the merchant answered gloomily, “and ruined me.” At its other end hung a precious chandelier.
