A hyena, a monkey, a macaque and a snake were hired to serve the lion, and the lion gave each of them a job. He ordered the hyena to guard the donkeys, the snake to guard the things, the macaque to guard the sorghum, and made the monkey his room maid. And so everyone went to do their job. The monkey, following the orders of his master, watched everyone.
One day, while making her rounds, she saw that the hyena, instead of guarding the donkeys, had fallen asleep, stretched out on the ground. The monkey crept up, cut open the belly of one donkey with a blow of a knife and, smearing the hyena’s mouth with his blood, left. Then, waiting for the macaque to fall asleep, the monkey went to the field, picked sorghum and scattered it near the macaque, as if it was chewing it. Then she crept up to the snake and, seeing that it was sleeping, scattered, beat and damaged all the things that it was guarding. Having done this, the monkey went to his master with an upset look.
- What's happened? Why are you so sad? - the lion asked her.
- My master! - answered the monkey. “What I saw now upsets me.”
-Will you tell me what happened? - asked the lion. And the monkey began his story:
- My master! Those whom you trusted and whom you had the honor of taking into your service did not justify your trust. The hyena tore and ate the donkey, and is now fast asleep. The macaque picked sorghum and, having eaten, fell asleep. And the snake, instead of guarding the things, broke them and also went to bed.
When the lion heard this, he became terribly angry and went to check what the monkey had told him about. Having walked around everyone, he was convinced that the monkey was telling the truth. Then he ordered them to be seized, tied up and sent to prison.
