Teacher Shon Saku left this world when he was 61 years old. Having completed his life's task, he left behind a great teaching, much richer than that of most other Zen teachers. Usually his students slept during the day, and when he saw this, he himself did not waste a minute.
When he was only 12 years old, he studied the philosophical speculations of the Tendai school. One summer day the air was so hot that little Sen stretched out his legs and fell asleep while the teacher was away.
Three hours passed when, suddenly waking up, he heard the teacher enter. But it was too late. He was lying right across the doors.
“I beg your pardon, I beg your pardon,” the teacher whispered, carefully stepping over him, as if he were one of the famous guests.
After that, Sean never slept during the day.
