Silence

Four Zen students, and close friends, promised each other to remain silent in order to deepen their meditation. The first day they were silent. Their meditation began auspiciously, but when night came and the kerosene lamps became very dim, one of the students could not restrain himself and shouted to the servant:

- Fix those lamps!

The second student was surprised to hear the first one speak.

“We agreed not to say a word,” he remarked.

- You idiots, why are you talking? - asked the third.

“I’m the only one who is silent,” concluded the fourth.
