Once upon a time there lived two brothers, they worked in the same field and always divided the harvest from it equally.

One day one of them woke up in the middle of the night and thought: “My brother is married and has children. He has more troubles and expenses than I do. Let me drag a few bags of grain from my barn to him, it will be fair. Yes, but he is too proud and noble for me. If he sees it, he’ll probably refuse, so I’d better do it at night, at least now, and he won’t guess anything.”

So he did, carried the bags to his brother and went to bed.

And a little later the other brother woke up and thought: “It’s not good that I’m taking half the harvest. My brother is single, and he is deprived of the joy of family life, let me give him a few bags of grain, let him at least be better off with this.”

No sooner said than done.

And in the morning, when they woke up and looked into their barns, their surprise knew no bounds - everyone in the barn had exactly the same amount of grain as the day before.

Years passed, but none of them could understand why, when he always sneaked several bags of grain into his brother’s barn, the next morning he had the same number of bags.
