The shepherd was tending the sheep. When he was driving the flock home, a lamb got away from him and fell into a hole. And there sat a hungry wolf, and the poor lamb became his prey. Apparently this was his share of luck.
When the shepherd found out what happened to the lamb, he did not worry, deciding that everyone could get their share of luck while sitting at home.
One day, a shepherd, working in the garden, accidentally dug up a jug filled with gold coins. This find, oddly enough, did not interest him at all. He buried the jar of gold back in the ground and, coming home, said to his wife:
– Today, while working in our garden, I dug up a jar of gold coins. I did not take advantage of my luck and buried the jug in the ground.
The wife gasped and attacked her husband;
“You’re so stupid, why didn’t you bring home a jug of gold, it’s a whole lot of wealth?”
And the husband calmly answered:
– Don’t worry, I thought about everything: if this find is my share of luck, then it won’t go anywhere, it will be mine.
While the shepherd was talking with his wife, thieves who happened to be near the walls of his place heard about his discovery.
When it got dark, the thieves came for the loot and, having dug up a jar of gold coins in the garden, dragged it into the forest. There they removed the lid from the jug and looked inside, but instead of gold coins they saw copper-red snakes.
The thieves decided to punish the shepherd. “Here, the swindler, he wanted to destroy us, but we will take revenge on him!” - they threatened.
The thieves sealed the jug with a lid, took it and threw it through the window into the shepherd’s patskha, saying: “Let the snakes bite that scoundrel who so brazenly deceived us. Let him rejoice now.”
Having done this, the thieves fled. But what they expected did not happen. Gold coins tumbled out of the jug onto the floor.
This time the owner happily rushed to collect the money, confident that these were gifts from his lucky lot.
