One day two Serbs, brothers, quarreled. They grabbed their knives. Then a Turk happened and began to separate them, and when one of the brothers swung a knife to cut off the other’s hand, the Turk parried the blow with his gun. The brothers came to their senses, separated, and the Turk went his way. Soon they met again in a coffee shop, where there were many Christians and Turks. The Turk says to the Serb whose hand he saved:
“You know, Vlah,” the other day, when your brother wanted to cut off your hand, “if it weren’t for me, you would have had a bad time.”
The Serb felt ashamed and annoyed, he jumped up, ran to his brother and said:
“Strike me, brother, cut off my hand so that your blade doesn’t get bored.”
- Why? - asks the brother.
“Eh, it’s better if my own brother cuts off my hand than for a Turk to reproach me all my life.”
