The young man approached a Sufi sitting on the side of the road and asked if he could learn from him.

“Study,” answered the Sufi.

All day long, travelers stopped near him and asked questions about the meaning of life, about the nature of the human spirit, about the mystery of death and immortality, about ways to find the Path and the innermost essence of Sufism. But the Sufi sat silently with his head on his knees.

One by one people left. In the evening, a poor man with a heavy burden approached them and asked how to get to the nearest city. The Sufi immediately stood up, put his luggage on his shoulders and walked with the peasant, showing him the way.

When he returned to the crossroads again, the young man asked in surprise:

“This man who looks like a poor peasant, is he actually a hidden saint, one of the high-ranking secret wanderers?”

The Sufi said:

- No. It really was a peasant. But he was the only one who asked me what he was really interested in.
