Sea granny

For a long time, there was a graveyard on the shore of Teriberskaya Bay, a sea bay. At that time, only the Sami lived there.

They engaged in marine fishing and caught fish. Their boats are wooden, sewn with reindeer sinew, so small and nimble. It is difficult for fishermen on these boats in bad weather. The Barents Sea is harsh and storms are frequent. In bad weather, you can’t even hide in the bay. The waves roam in it - cleaner than on the open sea.

Somehow the Sami got together and began to think: should we look for another place for a graveyard. Teriberskaya Bay is painfully open to all storms and winds.

And Mores-akanch, the Grandmother of the Sea, lived in this churchyard. She listened and listened and said:

“My great-grandfather fished in this place, my grandfather, my father, my husband, and now my sons and grandsons.” I'm ashamed to listen to you, fishermen. Who is it that leaves their native place?

The fishermen argued with her.

“Okay,” says the Grandmother of the Sea, “I will save you from bad weather, from storms.”

The Sami did not believe her.

“How will you save us from bad weather?” they ask.

“You’ll see soon,” answered the old woman.

“No,” say the Sami, “tell me, where will you get protection?”

“I’ll take her from Tsyp-Navolok and bring her to Teriberka,” said the grandmother.

That's how grandma is! What did you think!

And she says:

“You go to bed and don’t come out of your bed, don’t look at the sea until I call you myself.”

The Sami promised to do as the old woman ordered, and went to bed.

Moresya lit a big fire and put cod in it. He cooks the soup, stirs it with a whale fin, and speaks secret words. A terrible storm arose at sea, and a thick fog fell on the land and water. The granny of the sea instantly reached the right place along it, tore off a large piece of land from the Rybachy Peninsula and swam on it across the sea to the east, to Teriberka. And then morning came. The sky has cleared. The fog came in torn wisps and all melted away.

The land floats past the mouth of the Kremnevaya River. And at the mouth of that Sami settlement - Poshgost of the Worn Rock. It was called that because the rocks there were badly broken by storms. Sami women get up early. two women came out to look at the sea, whether it was time to wake up their husbands and send them out for fish. They see: the earth is floating.

They shouted:

- People, wake up! Miracles are happening! The sea was clear, now there is land on it!

The Sami ran out of their vezhas and couldn’t believe their eyes. There is a large island opposite their churchyard.

It is now called Kildin.

Here's how it all worked out. Those women didn’t know: they couldn’t scream when they saw the floating island.

That piece of earth stopped because of a human cry. And Moresya, who floated on it to protect the Teriber Bay from bad weather, instantly turned to stone. And she became the main sea seid, the good spirit of the sea. Many times the Sami industrialists went to the stone grandmother and brought her whale vertebrae and all kinds of fish as gifts.

And she gave everyone good luck in the maritime industry.

Many years have passed, so many that it is impossible to count. The seid stands and stands - a large stone, towering over the sea.

Yes, only once did a warship pass by the island. The captain saw it through binoculars: the stone was standing over the sea.

I started asking a local sailor what kind of stone it was. He told this story about the seid grandmother. The captain laughed. And he ordered to fire a cannon at that stone.

And to this day Mores stands in the same place, only a pile of rubble from that shooting around her. And she herself is completely intact.

That's how it happens.
