Once upon a time there lived a man who kept livestock. From one sage he learned to understand the language of animals and gradually began to eavesdrop on their conversations.
One day this man heard a rooster tell the dog that the horse would die very soon. To avoid incurring losses, the man sold the horse in advance.
After some time, having overheard a conversation between a rooster and a dog and learning that his mule would soon die, the man sold it.
He was extremely pleased and believed that the value of knowledge lies in helping a person in everyday affairs.
But one day the rooster told the dog that their owner would soon die. In a panic, the man rushed to the sage for advice. The sage said:
- Now you can sell yourself in advance!
Truly, knowledge that helps to see the properties of others is useless when it comes to a person’s greatest concern - himself.
