Sufi parable from Rumi One rich merchant from Tabriz, having problems, came to Konya in order to see Rumi. The merchant took 50 gold coins with him, deciding to present them to the sage. When he entered the reception hall and saw Mawlana, he was overcome with excitement.
Jalaliddin said:
- Your 50 gold has been accepted! But you lost 200 and that brought you here. God has punished you, but He is also showing you something. Now everything will work out for you.
Rumi's insight amazed the merchant. Rumi continued:
“You had to experience a lot of difficulties because one day, far to the west, in the Christian world, while passing by a Christian dervish, you spat on him. Find him, ask for forgiveness and say our regards.
Here the merchant was completely confused when he saw that his soul was an open book for Rumi.
“Look,” said Jalaliddin, “now we will show it to you.”
With these words, the Master touched the wall of the room, and the merchant’s gaze revealed a market square in Europe and a saint lying on it. The merchant recoiled from this wall and left the Master deeply shocked.
He immediately went to Europe and found a Christian dervish. As he approached, the dervish looked at him and said:
“Our Master Jalaliddin contacted me.
The merchant looked in the direction where the dervish was pointing and saw, as if in a painting, Jalaliddin, who chanted the following verses:
“And for a ruby, and for a simple pebble, there is a place for everything on His hill.”
Returning to Konya, the merchant bowed to the Christian dervish to Jalaliddin and settled in the dervish community.
