Long before the arrival of the Spaniards, the great Mayan cacique (leader) Tutul Shiu had a long, very long rope. If he intended to visit another village, then he only had to give the order, and the rope itself would quickly stretch through the air to the desired location. The result was a road along which one could move quickly. This wonderful rope was called Clouds of the Shiu clan, and everyone revered it very much.
After the arrival of the Spaniards, one day the Mayan leader ordered a rope to be stretched from the top of one of the pyramids to the main Christian cathedral of the beautiful city of Merida, and it was along it that he reached the place.
But years passed and the people of Shiu scattered across the earth, and they considered it a good idea to hide the rope in a well-cenote called Shkabacheen. And then one day a curious person accidentally discovered her there. He took the rope out of the cave into the light of day and unwound it. He then tried to put it back in the wooden chest where Tutul Shiu kept it. But nothing worked out for him! It so happened that the rope mysteriously became even longer and did not fit into the chest.
No matter how hard the man tried, it was all in vain. Over and over again, the rope grew larger and larger, becoming longer and longer. Seeing that he couldn’t do anything with the magic rope, the man became seriously worried. He couldn’t think of anything better than to cut it into pieces. But as soon as he began to do this, blood began to ooze from each cut! Then the unfortunate man, in a panic, stuffed the already cut pieces into the box, and left the rest lying on the ground.

“...Many people know that this rope is still kept inside the cave in the cenote. She is guarded by the old woman Shnuk and the Feathered Serpent Shkukikanom. Others say that the rope was taken to the state capital, and maybe even it is now in the capital, Mexico City.
They also say that the rope that was cut into pieces are roads, of which there are more and more of them every day on earth. And the blood that flows from the cut is the same blood that is shed day after day in numerous accidents that occur on the roads.”
