Right hand of Saint Ulten

Right hand of Saint Ulten

Once upon a time, God gifted Saint Ulten with supernatural power. And only one person in all of Ireland knew the power of Saint Ulten. It was Ulten himself. A great disaster struck Ireland in the forties of the sixth century - the Black Death. It was necessary to close all Irish schools and send students home, where many of them no longer found their parents alive. And Saint Ulten then opened a home for orphaned children and replaced mother and father for many, many of them.

The famous Ongush the Loser recorded a legend from those times about this man.

It so happened that an enemy flotilla arrived on the shores of Ireland. And Darmid, the High King of Ireland, sent a messenger with this alarming news to Ulten, begging him to intercede with God and avert a new misfortune threatening the ill-fated kingdom.

This news was conveyed to Ulten just as he was feeding the children. But he raised his free left hand against the enemy flotilla - he caused a storm and sank all the ships. And when they came to him with gratitude, he replied reproachfully:

- Be ashamed! Couldn't I have waited until my right hand was free? If I had raised my right hand, Eire (Eire is one of the names for Ireland) would no longer know a single foreign invader!

In the old days they said:

Solomon was wise, Samson was strong, Methuselah knew life perfectly, but even all of them together would not have taken off the shoes of a barefoot man.
