Having come to visit a sick comrade, Nasreddin found himself at just such a moment when a doctor came to see him. He was in the house for no more than a minute, and the speed with which he made the diagnosis stunned Mulla.

First the doctor looked at the patient's tongue, then was silent for a while. Then he said:

— You ate green apples. Stop eating them and you'll get better in a couple of days.

Forgetting about everything in the world, Mulla followed the doctor. “Tell me, doctor,” he gasped, “please tell me, how do you do this?”

“It’s quite simple once you learn to recognize different situations,” said the doctor. “You see, as soon as I found out that a person had a stomach ache, I began to look for the cause. When I entered the patient’s room, I saw a bunch of green apple cores lying under his bed. The rest was obvious.

Nasreddin thanked him for the lesson. The next time he visited one of his friends, his friend's wife answered the door.

“Mulla,” she said, “we don’t need a philosopher, but a doctor.” My husband has a stomach ache.

“Don’t think that a philosopher cannot be a doctor, O woman,” said Nasreddin, squeezing through the door.

The patient moaned while lying on the bed. Nasreddin approached him, looked under the bed and called his wife.

“It’s nothing serious,” he told her. - In a couple of days he will be fine. But you must see to it that he gives up the habit of eating saddles and harnesses.
