A mouse and a little mouse settled in the mill and began to live happily ever after. There was no cat nearby, and there was always plenty of food.

Some time passed like this. The mouse became proud and began

to think that she and her son are more important than everyone else. Soon the mouse grew up and he needed to find a bride.

“Who should we become related to,” the mouse thought. “All around are simple animals.” And she decided to woo the sun for her son. After all, there is no one higher and more beautiful than the sun.

The mouse went to the sun and began to ask him to marry his son.

“It’s better to turn to the cloud,” advised the sun. “It’s stronger, because it can always cover me.”

The mouse went to the cloud and began to woo it.

“You better turn to the wind,” said the cloud. “It is stronger than me, since it can always drive me away.”

The mouse went to the wind and began to woo him.

“Turn to the mountain,” advised the wind. “It is stronger: it can block my path.”

The mouse went to the mountain and began to woo her.

“You’d better turn to the mouse,” said the mountain. “The mouse is still stronger: it can gnaw at me wherever it wants.”

And the mouse believed that there was no one in the world stronger than her tribe, and she married a young mouse who lived next door to her son.
