Two people came to Nasreddin, who was acting as a judge. One of them said:
“This man bit me on the ear, and I demand compensation.”
Another stated:
- He bit himself.
Nasreddin postponed the proceedings and retired to his apartment, where he spent half an hour trying to bite his ear. This caused him to fall and cut his forehead. He then returned to the courtroom.
“Check the man with a bitten ear,” Nasreddin ordered, “if his forehead is broken, it means he bit himself, and that will be the end of the matter.” If this is not the case, it means that someone else was bitten, and the victim must be paid three bars of silver.
