One Aztec emperor had a daughter named Iztaccihuatl. And the emperor had one very strong and handsome warrior, whose name was Popocatepetl.
One day, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl met by chance, saw each other and fell in love. But the emperor found out about their feelings and then he decided to send Popocatepetl to war in the Oaxaca Valley. He told the young warrior that he would give him his daughter as his wife when he returned from the war. But the emperor did not think that the warrior would be able to survive this bloody war, moreover, he had other intentions for his daughter - he decided to marry her to a noble man.
While the young warrior was away, the father told his daughter that her lover had died on the battlefield. Iztaccihuatl became darker than a cloud and soon died of sadness and grief. And when the young warrior returned home safe and sound, he found only the dead body of his beloved.
Then he took her body in his arms and carried her to the top of the mountains. He laid her on the ground, lay down next to her and himself died of grief and sadness.
The gods saw everything that happened to them. And then the Gods covered them with a blanket of snow and turned them into mountains.
Today Iztaccihuatl is known as the “Sleeping Woman” - a mountain in which the outline of a woman lying on her side can be discerned; and Popocatépetl, or “Smoking Mountain,” became a volcano that still rains down ash and lava on the inhabitants of the valley, avenging the death of his beloved.
