Yakub, the son of a judge, said that he once asked Bahauddin Naqshbandi the following question:
“When I was with Murshid in Tabriz, he often gave a sign not to speak to him, for he entered into a special state of reflection. You are available to us at any time. Am I right in concluding that this difference is due to the perfection of your ability to renounce, under constant self-control?
Bahauddin replied:
- You are wrong when in all cases you associate the behavior of a certain person with a certain level of his spiritual development. You look for arguments in everything that speak in favor of either differences or similarities. There is no need for such techniques when we are talking about something that goes beyond the scope of this approach. The behavior of the wise is different due to personal characteristics, and not due to differences in their spiritual level.
