One man studied Zen under Bokuju, to whom he was very devoted. Every time he approached him, Bokuju waved his hand, saying:

- Not now, not now!

One evening he became desperate:

- How can this happen? I have no instructions to lead myself to realization. The master simply drives me away, saying: “Not now.” What can I do? What should I think about this?

He continued in the same vein, thinking, reflecting, meditating, desperately but stubbornly sticking to the object of his research and viewing it from all possible points of view. Suddenly, something flashed in his mind and he immediately became aware, understanding what the Master wanted from him. The next morning he visited the Master. Seeing him, he exclaimed:

“You have it now, you have it now!”
